kim fowler illustration & fine art -- portfolio about blog shop contact menu portfolio about blog shop contact hecate 2016, fineliner pen, ink wash, acrylic paint and digital media hecate is the first of a series of work exploring a new direction and experimenting with mark-making skills in my favourite medium; fine liner pen. inspired by my idols (e.g alphonse mucha, aubrey beardsley and art nouveau in general), this piece is steeped in symbolism and mystical reference as hecate is the three headed goddess, queen of the night, goddess of magick and the deity associated with necromancy. in the spirit of art nouveau the piece was imagined as a long panel with graphic whiplash curves and the sinuous lines of natural forms. at the top, with the heavenly arch decorated with grecian style mosaics, flies a swooping owl clutching a ceremonial dagger. owls and daggers are a strong link with hecate representing the night and sacrifice. the dagger sparks as it clashes against hecate's crown in the centre motif. the central head of hecate wears a spray of poisonous flowers in her hair; deadly nightshade, bleeding hearts, lilies and lily of the valley, and a snake pendant about her neck. her flanking heads also wear the serpent as a circlet on their foreheads. snakes are generally associated with death in ancient greece and brings together the connection of necromancy. the three heads of hecate are haloed by a huge mosaic disc which houses mysterious symbols and dedications to the goddess and above it birds roost in the bowing oak trees. circling the disc in runic style lettering is the orphic hymn to hecate which is chanted by most practising wiccans before any ritual to ask for her protection: hekate einodia, trioditis, lovely dame, of earthly, watery, and celestial frame, sepulchral, in a saffron veil arrayed, pleased with dark ghosts that wander through the shade; perseis, solitary goddess, hail! the world’s key-bearer, never doomed to fail; in stags rejoicing, huntress, nightly seen, and drawn by bulls, unconquerable queen; leader, nymphe, nurse, on mountains wandering, hear the suppliants who with holy rites thy power revere, and to the herdsman with a favouring mind draw near.” – orphic hymn 1 to hecate beneath lies a haunted clearing in a forest where the wandering spirits of the three stages of woman meet at a crossroads; the maiden, the mother and the crone. these three are representative of feminine energy, mystery and psychic abilities, all important and highly associated with hecate. they also link with the three stages of the moon; waxing, full and waning - the symbol of which can be seen in the central motif of the lettering at the base. in the foreground, in the shadows and en garde are two greyhounds. it is said that " hekate led the ghosts of the dead across the world at night. her passage was heralded by the baying of dogs." the completion of this piece has been a challenge and an absolute labour of love. initially started in december 2015 and finished july 2016, it has been the longest and largest project to date. now complete i can experiment with applying the image decoratively in the stylistic spirit of art nouveau pieces. i hope that i have done the goddess justice and long may she reign! hecate owl detail from hecate head detail from hecate greyhounds and ghost detail from hecate lettering detail from hecate pierrot, harlequin & columbine current work-in-progress, illustration and mixed media installation piece a series of illustrations completed for a music box installation piece to be exhibited as part of the eco-create 'masquerade' exhibition in january 2018. these illustrations will be applied in print methods and decoupage techniques to upcycle the outside of a box, sourced in a junk shop, which will be eventually transformed into a music box with a winding key. these illustrations will also be developed into a repeat pattern to be used on fabric as part of a series i am currently developing. phased illustrations telling the story behind the song 'you are my sunshine' using photoshop original pen drawing illustrations original illustration work-in-progress music box lid music box with images applies via decoupage and tansfer printing methods the siren's song 2017, laser print transfer on to drift wood - original image drawn with fine liner pens the image of the siren was created especially for the 'time and tide waits for no man' 2017 exhibition at banks mill studios. the main purpose of the exhibition is to highlight environmental issues and to promote craftspeople and artists who use low impact techniques/recycled/reclaimed materials. my entry, 'the siren's song', was originally hand drawn, then scanned and printed with a laser printer. i then used a cleaning solution made from orange peel to transfer the toner onto a piece of driftwood. i have used this method a number of times on different projects but this, by far, has been the best it has ever worked. i won silver too!!! the siren's song original pen drawing ludwig's swan 2013, acrylic and white ink on cartridge paper 'ludwig's swan' is the first painting in series inspired by the swan king; the fairy-tale king of bavaria, ludwig ii. greatly influenced by old bavarian folk stories, including lohengrin, and growing up in a castle with these tales depicted on murals covering the walls of course the young king's mind was full of magic and dreams. one of his favourite birds which features through his most iconic castle 'neuschwanstein' (meaning new swan stone) is the swan. the swan is ludwig's ultimate totemic symbol. ludwig's swan is my homage to the dream king and is shrouded with symbolism relating to ludwig ii. from the jasmine flowers strewn in the lake (a favourite flower of his dear cousin sisi - the empress of austria) to the weeping willow (acting as curtain, shielding the swan from reality - of which ludwig hated) and the full moon glowing in the sky (ludwig was also known as the moon king due to his nocturnal lifestyle). on an almost pilgrimage like trip to bavaria in the summer of 2015 i visited the wittelsbach crypt at the base of st. michaels kirche in munich. here the elaborate tomb of ludwig ii lies with various memento's hanging from the railings protecting it. hopefully the postcard i left of this very picture still remains threaded through the grating. emergo: the metamorphosis of medusa 2016 - 2017, fineliner pen drawing and ink wash emergo: the metamorph osis of medusa ' is technically one of the most ambitious drawings i have completed to date, w orking in fine liner pen, with accents of white ink. medusa's creation and plight are referenced within symbolic details in her jewellery , the snake armour and also within the background context. on a personal level, and together with the basic narrative, i wanted to link this image to the issues surrounding mental health; in particularly anxiety and depression. to me , medusa is the ultimate symbol to represent the demons which reside in our heads. the snakes are purposely chained together, some have broken free whilst others are harnessed and docile. one is dead, but it is still there none the less. the latin quote with in the halo ' luctor et e mergo ' translates to 'i struggle and emerge', embodying the strength of those living with mental health issues. this piece will be part of the 'behind the smile' exhibition that will be taking place at banks mill studios in march 2018. the exhibition hopes to bring awareness to those who live with hidden illness and hopes to help to expel the taboos that surround them . the imperial sentinel 2014, acrylic paint and white ink on cartridge paper 'the imperial sentinel', is the second is the series of work inspired by ludwig ii of bavaria and was produced for the 'majestic avia' exhibition at banks mill, uk in 2014.the pictures produced for this exhibition were based around ludwig's fascination with birds and his constant association with swans and peacocks. this p
